Chargers owners refute rumor of sale
The San Diego Chargers have long been rumored to be one of the teams that might move to Los Angeles when Farmers Field is completed. The rumor intensified Tuesday when word came that the teams owners, the Spanos family, are ready to sell the team for between $800 million and $900 million to AEG, which owns the Los Angeles Kings and Los Angeles Galaxy as well as a stake in the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Spanos family, however, has other thoughts. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that there is no sale underway. "Never gonna happen," Chargers spokesman Mark Fabiani wrote in an email Tuesday to the paper.
Looks like Philip Rivers(notes) and company wont have to be packing the moving boxes anytime soon.

Carmelo Anthony gathering Knicks in October
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony(notes) isnt planning as if the NBA season is going to be called off any second now. Instead, Anthony is worried about whether he and his teammates will be ready when the new collective bargaining agreement is signed and players need to actually get back on the court and play.
ESPN New York reports that Anthony is thinking about getting his teammates that he only spent 27 games with last season together to work out. "Most likely I think as the month goes on, probably early October, well start getting guys together," Anthony said, the site reports. "Ill make it my duty to get guys together whether its in LA, New York or a neutral place."
While that plan sounds like a thoughtful one, another one of Anthonys brainstorms isnt likely to become reality. The Brooklyn native suggests that players would like to go ahead and play ball while the negotiations take place: "Just let us play and continue to negotiate. Thats what we say," Anthony said Tuesday, ESPN New York reports. "I want a deal done, we all want a deal done. We just want it to be fair for both parties. We want to play basketball at the end of the day. We dont care about none of that other stuff. They could settle that; just let us play and continue to negotiate."

Report: Corey Maggette expected to sign in Greece
Corey Maggette(notes) has been in the league since 1999 when the Seattle SuperSonics drafted him 13th overall and soon traded him to the Orlando Magic. Since then, the 31-year-old forward has played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks. In the week before the lockout began this summer, Maggette was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats. Now, like a lot of other pro basketball players, he may be adding a jersey to his collection that is unfamiliar to most NBA fans.
Eurobasket reports that the 6-6 Maggette is expected to land in the Greek city of Thessaloniki Wednesday and negotiate a deal with PAOK. Maggette will check out the city and team facilities, the site notes, and it is expected that Maggette will make his decision at the end of the week.
Maggette played 67 games for the Bucks last season, averaging 12 points and five rebounds per game.

Red Sox still hoping for Buchholz return
Before the Boston Red Sox were taken down by the New York Yankees 5-2 on Tuesday, a fella that Boston thought would be a key ingredient to its success this year, Clay Buchholz(notes), threw a ball for the first time in weeks, according to the Boston Herald.
"Even though the right-handers return from a back injury remains a distinct longshot, Buchholz took a step toward contributing down the stretch," the paper reports, by making "20 or 25 light tosses from 60 feet" with "no ill effects."
Buchholz, who has been on the disabled list since June 17 will throw again Wednesday and then continue to build up arm strength, the Herald notes.
"No problems, no pain," said Buchholz, who won 17 games and had a 2.33 ERA in 2010 but is 6-3 this year with a 3.48 ERA. "The Red Sox have been holding out hope that he could return in some role by the end of September, perhaps as a reliever," the paper notes.
However, Manager Terry Francona isnt banking on it happening: "Were going to take this very deliberate and hes going to have to pass some tests," Francona said, according to the Herald. "But the good news is he feels good. Whether he pitches this year or not, wed hate like heck for him to go into the offseason not feeling well."

Ozzie Guillen ready to walk if no extension comes?
White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen is never afraid to let his feelings be known. What he is feeling these days is that hed like to have a contract extension from the team before opening day of next season or he is going to not bother working the final year of his contract, according to ESPN Chicago.
"One thing I make clear, I dont think Im going to be back here for a one-year contract and I dont know what to do with the next year," Guillen said, according to the site.
While Guillen was happy to discuss the issue with the reporter, he also did say that he isnt going to take the issue to White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and would be "embarrassed" to ask for a new contract after a bad season. The Sox are currently five games out of first in the American League Central and 13 games back in the American League wild-card race.
Guillen has managed the White Sox since 2004 and led the team to a World Series title in 2005, the same year he won American League Manager of the Year.

Cardinals not trading Berkman
The St. Louis Cardinals spent a few days trying to work out a deal that would have sent Lance Berkman(notes) to the Texas Rangers before Thursdays waiver-trade deadline, but Berkman said "that ship has sailed," according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Berkman, who will be a free agent at seasons end, is enjoying his stay in St. Louis so much that he told GM John Mozeliak that if was dealt, he wouldnt sign with the Cards this offseason, the paper reports.
"We did have some teams inquire in the past week," Mozeliak said, according to the Post-Dispatch. "I met with Lance and we talked about the situation. Ultimately, our goal is to have him back with us next year. Unless something comes along that absolutely blows us out of the water, I dont see him going anywhere."
Berkman is hitting .286 with 30 homers this year.

Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez(notes) made a rehab appearance for the Class-A Jupiter Hammerheads Tuesday as he recovers from a sprained left shoulder. As it turns out, it may be his last game of the season, according to MLB.com.

Titans and RB Johnson moving toward deal?
Its been 34 days of holding out for Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson and his demands remain high, according to the Tennessean. "The gaps between the two sides are wide: as much as $4 million in annual salary and at least $10 million in guaranteed money," the paper reports.
Johnson would like to be making "around $13.5 million per season," the paper reports. If the team follows through on its promise to make Johnson the leagues highest-paid running back, he would make about $10 million to $11 million each season, the paper notes.
"So far, (agent Joel) Segal and (Titans GM Mike) Reinfeldt have struggled to get anywhere close to common ground," the paper reports.
NFL.com reports that, while the two sides "were at a stalemate after a face-to-face meeting last week," the "conversations continue to the point where momentum toward a new deal could build considerably by the weekend, if not sooner."
